Field Notes

Description:

This large and strong looking wasp. Approximately 30mm face-to-tail, setae under thorax reminded me of robber flies.

Habitat:

Under strong night lights at a local used car yard. Surrounded by eucalyptus forest. Very warm conditions with a strong north-westerly during the day.

Great shot Professor Mark It seems to me that Scoliidae are more hairy than Tiphiidae. I saw one similar; http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/56946097 I think these are males and the females are wingless http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/63236003 http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8474737
Thanks for the lead John. I sort of knew it was NOT the Exeirus. :)
Hi Mark I figure this is some type of Tiphiidae http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiphiidae Not a cicada killer.
