Description:
The young fruit bodies first appear as white cylinders emerging from the ground, then the bell-shaped caps open out. The caps are white, and covered with scales. The gills beneath the cap are white, then pink, then turn black and secrete a black liquid filled with spores. This is unusual because it will turn black and dissolve itself.
Habitat:
Grows in decayed woody debris, damp areas, on lawns, along gravel roads and open areas.
Notes:
These mushrooms were found in a marshy area near north Cotton Lake road. The are often called, the shaggy mane, shaggy ink cap, or lawyer's wig. When young it can be eaten soon after being collected.
