African Elephant
Loxodonta africana
-1.28325, 36.8172
Field Notes
Description:
These are orphan elephants in the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Rehabilitation center just outside of Nairobi Kenya. These baby elephants are showing up for lunch (giant bottles of milk).
Notes:
Their mothers were killed by poachers for their tusks. Currently the price for Ivory is higher than gold, which should put in perspective why poachers are currently higher in activity this decade then any previous. The illegal animal trade is a very serious problem in Africa and in all National reserves. With so much land, rangers can only cover so much and lose animals despite their best efforts... These animal include but are not limited to: Rhinos, Giraffes, Secretary Birds, Lions, Cheetahs, ect.
Pretty much the Big 5 are always the main targets..
