Belted Kingfisher
Megaceryle alcyon
34.02, -84.58
Field Notes
Description:
I spotted this male Kingfisher hanging out on the power lines in an area where I usually see hawks and kestrels.
Habitat:
This bird's breeding habitat is near inland bodies of waters or coasts across most of Canada, Alaska and the United States. Kingfishers live near streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, and estuaries. They nest in burrows that they dig into soft earthen banks, usually adjacent to or directly over water. Kingfishers spend winters in areas where the water doesn’t freeze so that they have continual access to their aquatic foods.
Notes:
Spotted on power lines near an uncultivated area next to a mining operation in Kennesaw, GA
