Field Notes

Description:

9.5 - 10 cm. Bill pink brightes toward base of mandible and blacker at tip. Mostly green, but with entire tail contrastingly rufous; lower underparts dingy grayish. Very much a generalist hummingbird feeding at a wide variety of flowers, one of the most numerous hummingbirds at feeders virtually throughout western Ecuador.

Habitat:

Common and widespread in shrubby and semiopen areas, cultivated regions and also gardens, and forest borders througout much of western Ecuador. Most numerous below 1.200 - 1.300 m, but in recent years a few have been turning up at much higher elevations to 2.500 - 2.600 m, especially in gardens north of Quito.
