Western Scrub Jay
Aphelocoma californica
34.0967, -117.72
Field Notes
Habitat:
Chaparral
Notes:
I know this jay very well so I will go into detail. These versatile birds are common in the chaparral, oak woodland, and suburban areas where I live. They are very clever corvids. I have often seen them bully other birds and even harass hawks. They prepare acorns by holding them against a tree branch and pecking the shell until their feet can peel the rest off. Their most common call is a harsh “shek”.
