Field Notes

Description:

This insect was like a cross between a dragonfly and a wasp. It had a very long thin black antenna-like thing coming from it's hind part. Later, we spotted two smaller versions of this insect on the same tree.
What is it?

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (1)

This appears to be an ichneumon wasp. The long, antenna-like thing at the posterior end is an ovipositor, used to inject eggs into the larvae of its host species. It is hard to make a positive ID, but this may be Megarhyssa macrurus: http://bugguide.net/node/view/84171/bgimage
