Field Notes

Description:

These are juvenile Barn Swallows, as evidenced by the pale yellow on both sides of the bill. *Adult Male Barn Swallows are around 7 inches long. They have a steel blue back, wings, and tail; the forehead, chin, and throat are rufous. *Female is less glossy and slightly paler than the male. *Juveniles are buffy on face and underparts, with pale yellow on the sides of the bill.

Habitat:

*Specific Habitat: I observed these barn swallows on the banks of a Duck Pond in Huntsville, Alabama.
*General Habitat: Barn swallows are found in fields, parks, marshes, meadows, ponds, and coastal waters. Their nests are built under the eaves of structures.

Notes:

-- A good many Barn Swallows can be found in this area during the summer months, but they are usually observed in swift flight. These juveniles were perching a good bit before skimming the surface of the pond for insects.
-- eBird reports Barn Swallows at this location from the end of April until the middle of August.
--The Barn Swallow is the most widespread species of swallow in the world; it is found in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America.
