Description:

Member of the family Nymphalidae, this butterfly's appearance varies somewhat seasonally. The upper side of the summer form's hindwings tend to be black, whereas the winter form's are reddish-orange. In either case, there is a "comma" mark mid-hindwing on the underside.

Habitat:

Commonly spotted in wooded areas near streams and rivers, ponds, marshes, as well as near other water sources.

Notes:

This particular spotting was near the Stone Face Trail in Shawnee National Forest, southern Illinois.
