Wow, thank you bayucca for all that research. I have uploaded a second picture so you can see the whole body. Maybe the yellow line can help you.. I would love to help searching but I really have not enough knowledge about butterflies for this!
Tough one! I checked hundreds of Erato but did not find a perfect match. Erato and the corresponding mimic Melpomene are all very variable within the genus and species, not forgetting all the possible hybrids. Common ones in your area are Erato phyllis (the normal phenotype does not match at all!) http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/L/ih/heliconius0490_i.htm and Erato venustus, which does usually not match as well http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/L/ih/heliconius0531_i.htm But from both are some similar to yours around, but differences are too big for following this trace. Erato amphitrite looks also similar: http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/L/heliconius_erato_amphitrite_types.htm http://cliniquevetodax.com/Heliconius/pages/erato%20amphitrite.html http://tolweb.org/Heliconius_erato/72242 I have to close my tabs on my iPad, so, I will come back later, meaning I will keep my eyes on this one...
Super, thx again bayucca!
I will give you the links later, I will also try to find the subspecies.
