it was several inches long and it's 'antanaes' moved pretty quick.

Hi April, there are several species of cockroach in California. The one you've spotted is the oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) aka Water bug. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oriental_cockroach
I thought this looked a bit interesting.
