Field Notes

Description:

-- General description: 1) The brown thrasher is bright reddish-brown above with thin, dark streaks on its buffy underparts. 2) Adults are 9 - 12 inches long. 3) They have heavy, dark streaking on their whitish underparts. 4) The face is gray-brown. 5) They have two black-and-white wingbars on their wings. 6) They have bright-yellow eyes.

Habitat:

-- Specific Habitat: I observed this Brown Thrasher in a residential area of north Alabama.
-- General Habitat: The brown thrasher resides in various habitats. Scrubby fields, dense regenerating woods, and forest edges are their preferred habitats. They also inhabit areas that are agricultural and near suburban areas

Notes:

-- Although it is infrequent, in winter I have seen brown thrashers eating from my suet feeders.
-- The Brown Thrasher is noted for having over 1000 song types, and the largest song repertoire of birds. One may sing more than 1,100 different song types.
