Field Notes

Description:

This is a conspicuous plant in both winter and summer because of its silver and green mottled leaves. The pea-green center of these small white flowers normally face the ground. I bent the flower back to get a closer look at this really interesting structure.

Habitat:

Native to eastern North America and Central America, from southern Quebec west to Illinois, and south to Florida and Panama. It can be found in sandy habitats, well-drained upland forests, oak-pine woods, and similar mesic habitats. It is very tolerant of acidic soil.

Notes:

Spotted growing on a wooded drive near an old church and cemetery and a utility plant.
