Field Notes

Description:

Heard more often than they are seen, many of these insects produce sounds by rubbing two parts of the body together -forewing against hindwing, for example. On many species the front or hind legs are bizarrely modified, usually for jumping, but also for digging. Most species are vegetarian. There is no larval or pupal stage, and adults differ from the immarures (called Nyphs)
