Field Notes

Description:

The Dryad's Saddle (no Dryad's riding at this time) is also known as "Pheasant's-back Polypore". Large, fleshy, tough, scaly, yellowish-brown cap with large, white to yellowish pores descending short stalk. Cap 23/8 - 12 inches. These images show large caps. almost circular to kidney-shaped with overlapping scales. Flesh 0.5-3.5 cm thick, white. Odor and taste like watermelon rind.

Habitat:

On living or dead deciduous wood such as elm, maple, willow, poplar and birch. These pictured are on maple.

Notes:

I added the last two pictures in the winter to show how they age.
