Field Notes

Description:

Leaves mostly five-lobed, with moderately deep U-shaped notches between lobes. Leaves are pale green below with edges firm, not drooping. In autumn the leaves turn reddish-orange with some yellow. Sugar maple are one of our most valuable hardwood trees.

Habitat:

Maples trees are scattered along the deciduous woods at Tamarac, especially along the roadsides.

Notes:

Maples are valued for shade, ornament, and lumber. Porcupines sometimes eat the inner bark of maples, and the twigs are a staple food of the cottontail rabbit, snowshoe hare, whitetail deer, and moose.
