Field Notes

Description:

Round, salmon-pink, becoming brick red, then brownish-black to black upon aging. Mushroom 1/16-5/8 inches.

Habitat:

Usually in swarms, on bark of dead or dying trees. Usually ash trees.

Notes:

Look alikes: H. argillaceum on ash trees and H. fascum grows on alders and birch.
