Fruit Fly (Walnut Husk Fly)
Rhagoletis sp.
16.7354, -92.6387
Field Notes
Description:
Larger Fruit Fly with orange-brown head and thorax and a bright yellow scutellum. The abdomen is banded and the wings have black patterns. 8 mm long, Family Tephritidae.
Habitat:
Landed on the kitchen window.
Notes:
This fly looks like a Rhagoletis, but the wing pattern does not closely fit any of the species. It is kind of a mix between Rhagoletis completa and Rhagoletis zoqui, both of which occur in Mexico and on Walnut. This is one of the Walnut Husk Flies. We have walnut trees in San Cristobal de Las Casas.
