Field Notes

Description:

Hodges 7859. Picture does not show the beautiful green coloration on this magnificent hawk moth.

Habitat:

Grass field bordered by woods, my backyard.

Notes:

This moth was feeding on petunias (see purple petal in photo) in a hanging basket around 10 p.m. A very strong flyer, it did not want to settle down to have its picture taken. I was unable to get a good picture of its face, with tightly coiled proboscis. I really like the striking coloration and patterns on this moth.
