Field Notes

Description:

Jumping spider enjoying a bee fly for lunch. The spider has red on its head and abdomen. The pedipalps and front legs have a lot of orange hairs. The chelicera are blue which is standard for the Phidippus species. "Closely related to Phidippus apacheanus and looks very similar. However, according to Edwards 2004(1), unlike P. apacheanus, which stays the same color throughout its life cycle (usually red, sometimes yellow), P. nikites changes colors at various instars (yellow→orange→red or yellow)."

Habitat:

Chaparral on Goldenbush. Found in the western US
