Dutchman's Pipe (like its relative Indian Pipe, Monotropa uniflora) has no chlorophyll; so, it can't get energy from sunlight. Instead, it gets nutrients from fungi in the soil.

Habitat:

Growing on the ground in a deciduous forest.

Notes:

Genetic testing suggests that Monotropa hypopitys should be placed in its own genus and be classified as Hypopitys monotropa.
