Field Notes

Description:

A common lionfish at the Tulsa Zoo. At least I think it's a common lionfish. It could be a red lionfish they're pretty identical and the photo is pretty bad. But hey I don't get enough of a chance to upload fish species so here we go. The common lionfish is mainly nocturnal and may hide in crevices during the daytime. It feeds on fish and small crustaceans. Of course as a lionfish I feel it goes without saying that they are venomous.

Habitat:

Native to the Indian Ocean, from the Red Sea, to South Africa, and to Indonesia; it has also recently been reported in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, near Cyprus. It is also now present off the east coast of the United States and in the Caribbean Sea where is regarded as an invasive species.
