American Elm
Ulmus Americana

Field Notes
Description:
This particular tree is the longest living one on Andover's campus, and has not contracted Dutch Elm Disease. Trees that don't contract Dutch Elm Disease can live for over several hundred years. They belong to the Ulmaceae family and they are part of the Ulmus genus.
This tree is important to me since it represents our connection to the past and the generations of Andover students that came before us. It not only provides shade, but serves as a note of awe of how six of seven generations of students have walked by this tree. Just like Andover students push through the rough patches and work their hardest, this tree has stood the test of time and passed unharmed despite the spread of Dutch Elm Disease.
