Field Notes

Description:

There are seven subspecies, and this is probably Francolinus afer swynnertoni since that one is native to Mozambique. The bird in the spotting was digging the ground in search for something edible. (picture 4 shows the digging action, and the inner eyelids of the bird are closed)

Habitat:

Next to the road. End of dry season and the first rains came a bit early this year. (Gorongoza National Park)

Notes:

It is active early and late in the day and is found in pairs or small groups. Its diet consists mainly of seeds, tubers, roots, berries and grass stalks although it will also eat insects and their larvae.
