Field Notes

Description:

When these ants build their nest, they stick the leaves of the tree together with a sticky glue, similar to spider silk. This sticky "glue" comes from the ant larvae. The workers carry larvae to the place where leaves have to be glued together. Then they simply squeeze the larvae (like squeezing a tube of toothpaste) and out comes the "glue". The larvae are unharmed by this process and are returned to their chamber inside the nest where they are fed on unfertilised eggs which the queen lays for this purpose - http://www.oisat.org/control_methods/nat......

Habitat:

Spotted in our backyard on a Mango Tree (Mangifera indica Linn.) locally called Mangang-kalabau. Plant information from - http://www.stuartxchange.org/Mangga.html.....
