Field Notes

Description:

This little guy flew past me, I thought at first he was a dragonfly, then he landed and went down into a hole in the ground. After a few minutes, he came out, covered in dirt, cleaning his face. I noticed he had what looked like pollen on his back legs. A solitary wasp of some kind? I have never seen one before.

Habitat:

He lives in a burrow he dug in the dirt, it's in the picture.

Burying Beetle

Nicrophorus carolinus

You're welcome :)...Cool beetle, but I definitely don't envy the abundance of fire ants!
Hi Christine! Thank you! That was fast :-) Turns out it's Nicrophorus carolinus, in the carrion beetle family. Thanks!! They don't seem to be really prevalent down here, they compete with fire ants...which are EVERYWHERE here.
Looks like a burying beetle (Nicrophorus sp.).
