Description:

Green larva with brown/black appendage which is held covering the back, or can be held straight out.

Habitat:

Vegetable garden, eggplant leaf.

Yes, and I also read that it can be composed of remnants from a prior molt... Fascinating!
The brown/black stuff you see on this larva is called a fecal shield. It is exactly what it sounds like. These larvae use feces to help mask their appearance. Kind of neat and gross at the same time.
