Field Notes

Description:

Large black seabird, orange throat patch inflates into a huge bright red-orange balloon when in courtship display. Long bill is gray, hooked. Wings are long and narrow. Tail is forked; legs and feet are dark gray. Eats fish, crustaceans, jellyfish. High soaring flight.

Habitat:

Caribbean Sea off coast of Belize.

Notes:

The magnificent frigatebird has the largest wingspan in comparison to its body, making it the only bird to have such a feature. These birds can stay in the air for almost a week, without landing. Frigatebirds are expert pilots.
These birds often sleep during their flight!
