Description:
The Banded woodpecker is a medium-sized woodpecker with a distinctive yellow-nape, and presently the only yellow-naped woodpecker in Singapore. Both sexes have a red crown, and the male (as seen here) also has red on the neck sides.
Habitat:
Primary forest (Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, one of the largest patches of primary rainforest left in Singapore)
Notes:
This bird is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Thailand.
Also recently often sighted in Singapore is the Crimson-winged Woodpecker (Picus puniceus); this species is predominantly olive-green and can be distinguished by its blue eye-ring.
