Field Notes

Habitat:

These Lesser Grass Blues were spotted in our front garden. They were on a tall blade of grass growing among some Caladium bicolor plants.

Notes:

Zizina otis oriens (Lycaenidae; Lycaeninae; Polyommatini). There are many species and subspecies, from the Subfamily Lycaeninae, in the Philippines, but members of the Tribe Polyommatini can be distinguished from others because they generally have rounded hindwings. When their wings are open, their upper surfaces display varying amounts of blue, hence the common name "Blues". There is an article in https://peecnature.org/butterflies-of-new-mexico/blues-lycaenidae-polyo…..... which says that the larva of some species secrete a fluid which ia attractive to ants, resulting in the larvae being "farmed" by ants. Ants are known to have such a relationship with aphids, but according to this article, the Ants/Blues relationship in New Mexico is confounding taxonomists.
