Field Notes

Description:

Large gray moth with mottled wings was about 1.5 inches long. I suspect this is a female based on the size and deed mottling of the wings. The larva bore into trees, making them a pest.

Habitat:

It was resting on a shady side of our house mid-day. They prefer deciduous forests; however, the communities at my home are Oak woodland, Chaparral and grasslands.
