Field Notes

Description:

Most species of thatching ants are bicolored red and
black (Fig. 2). A few are all black. They are medium
to large ants, averaging from 4–8 mm (3
/16–5
/16 inch)
long, with a notch or depression on the top of the
thorax when viewed from the side.

Habitat:

This small colony of thatching ants was found hibernating under a rock on the edge of a road.
