Field Notes

Description:

A medium-sized green lizard that does not change color. But the male has color-changing (usually reddish) head portion. It is also called Green Garden Lizard.

Habitat:

found in Alathur, close to the Western Ghats

Notes:

It had laid eggs and was covering up the hole. After it made the place as the place had looked before it dug for egg-laying, it left.

I think stripes individually vary but the number and placement should be consistent. The likely confusing species, Common forest lizard, Calotes calotes, has many more stripes. C nemoricola actually ranges mostly south of this so it might be 'Southern Green calotes' - http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/11674038 Good luck with searching.

Dear Mark Ridgway, I have edited my spotting according to your suggestion. But the distinct white stripes on my specimen is so different from the photo in your reference, that I am continuing the search
