Field Notes

Description:

This light brown butterfly rested on yarrow (Achillea sp.) for a few seconds. It fed on the flower's nectar and was covered in yellow pollen. The dorsal forewings are marked with a white line, while ventral wings are wavy-lined and black-spotted. Antennae and legs are patterned an alternating black and white.

Habitat:

Seen at the Ross Dam trailhead in North Cascades National Park.

I didn’t know what plant the elfin was feeding on. There was a beetle on it too but I couldn’t get a picture before it flew away. I’ll look at C. spinetorum and compare it to the other similar species I’ve seen on Bugguide. Thanks, Brian!
Awesome spotting Mauna! Yarrow is a great wildflower to watch for a variety of insects that feed on it. I agree with Callophrys sp. Also take a look at Callophrys spinetorum (thicket hairstreak).

Mauna it looks to be in the genus Callophrys (Elfins)
