Description:

An abundant bird across much of the Southeast USA and the tropics. Females black with grayish necks and heads; males are all black with white patterning on the back. This bird is known for its odd appearance, particularly in water. Consequently, it has been given names such as "water turkey" "darter". The name Anhinga derives from the Tupi word "snakebird".
