Field Notes
Description:
Challenging me to take these photos, this large moth... an Antheraea polyphemus, live as an adult for about seven days, because they have no mouth and exist only to breed. I suspect this is a female, because it flitted from branch and leaf quickly probably laying eggs. So, really exciting opportunity to see this one. The eye spots give it its name – from the Greek myth of the Cyclops Polyphemus. This was at the newly establish West Ridge Nature Preserve.
