Ringneck Snake
Diadophis punctatus
34.58, -84.69
Field Notes
Description:
Tiny black colubrid snake with a white/cream collar and vibrant yellow underside. It was a little bit longer than my pinkie finger! Look at the last photograph for a size comparison! My fifth picture shows this young snake in a defensive posture, showing its colorful underside.
Diadophis punctatus is typically a nocturnal snake that is not often seen during daylight. Despite being somewhat venomous, this species does not pose much of a threat as it is quite docile and possesses rear-facing fangs.
Habitat:
Found scurrying across our freshly disturbed driveway surrounded by dense mixed hardwood/pine forest.
