Field Notes

Description:

Bill is dark on top and orange under. Backside is an olive green from head to tail. Underneath is a lighter color. Yellowish wingbar with dark bar above and below. Almond shaped eyering. High crest on head.

Habitat:

Spotted going back and forth between two oak trees.

Notes:

The usual behavior for a Flycatcher but maybe not for a juvenile. Besides constantly being chase off by a Black Phoebe and returning to the same tree, this bird was not that shy. Sat on a branch, not standing right above us. Very curious and did not fly away from us. It did a float and drift down to snatch bugs. But did this with in 2 feet from us. Size from where we stood looked smaller then the normal Westerns.

Thank you Mariana and Adarsha
So cute :D Love how his little head pops around the tree!
Thank you Marta and Sarah. I thought so too. Way cute. From what I described in the notes I almost believed it was some other flycatcher. And I thought it was a leaf falling from the tree when it came down and touched the ground, at one time about a foot from my shoe. It did this to me four different times, no more then 2 feet. We were so surprised and it was so close we couldn't get a picture of it.
