Field Notes

Description:

The only bolete in our area with the distinctive spots on the rich brownish/red cap, yellow tubes and a thick dark stipe.

Habitat:

southern exposure temperate westcoast rainforest, Mission, BC. Moss and forest debris.

Notes:

There were several dozen of these along the trails of the forest in this wonderful mushrooming weather. October is mushroom month for southwestern BC!

Enjoyed eating the Admirable Boletes sautéed in butter and spread on a bed of rice. Yum!

It is so neat to see all these different kinds and I have 4 different kinds in my yard yes't but can't ID them. I have one I picked that I am doing paper/spore thing on but??

I added photo 3 to show the underside of the cap on this bolete. The sponge with the tubes is greenish/yellow and serves the same purpose as gills in gilled mushrooms. The spores will be dispersed from these tubes at maturity.

I look forward to seeing what you find there. We have a good amount of chanterelles this year too! Beautiful!

it's great that you have a great yield of mushrooms. We hardly had any!! There was a fire on Mt Diablo and i was told to look for Morels after a while.Morels flourish in burnt soil.

Thanks Jemma. I am going to try to go back to this trail as there were so many different kinds of mushrooms that I lost track!
