Field Notes

Description:

While approaching the historic town of Mont-St-Michel from the bay side, we would often stumbled upon these, looking like clusters of black berries or grapes. We learnt that these were clusters of squid or cuttlefish eggs (or egg sacs ?), usually attached to plants or algae in shallow waters, but often washed out to the beach. Once you find it, apparently it is too late for these eggs to survive.

Habitat:

Found on sandy beaches of northern France, washed out from the ocean, in intertidal sandy zone.
