Description:
A prodigious hunter, the great blue heron is the largest of North American herons. It will capture and eat nearly anything it can swallow including fish, snakes, amphibians, birds and mammals. This heron caught a medium sized fish - apparently a catfish and spent much time waiting for it to die - presumably so as not to get cut on it's sharp fins.
The photos, after the first one are in order of the action. The first photo fits in between his returning to shore and his flying across the pond. He was there showing off his catch for several minutes
Habitat:
Living free in a natural wetland in oak grassland, protected within the confines of Wildlife safari park in Winston.
Notes:
There is a section of the park, near the wetlands, cordoned off from the hoof stock via cattle guards, where it is safe to get out, stretch your legs, get a snack or take a closer look at the pond and it's wildlife. Many nice interpretive signs regarding wetlands and a lot of bird song much of the year. The park itself is the most successful cheetah breeding program in the US and has raised over 230 cheetah cubs.
