Some moths can be even more colourful than butterflies, and bigger also. The difference is in the antennae, Butterflies have a small or a long blob at the antennae tip while those of moths don't but often look like miniature feathers with a close inspection. In addition butterflies rest with wings fully open revealing all four uppersides or folded together upwards revealing only the undersides which may be a totally different colour; moths rest with wings folded backwards and/or downwards and rarely show the hindwings, which are often a different colour if they are seen.
We suspected that, but my daughter wanted to go with butterfly because of the colors. This was our first time using the app and trying to figure it out. Thank you.
