Field Notes

Description:

Initially bun shaped, the cap of Chlorophyllum rhacodes expands and becomes convex. Only rarely do shaggy parasols open out completely flat.
At maturity, the cap diameter ranges from 5 to 15cm; its flesh reddens when cut.

Habitat:

Chlorophyllum rhacodes is saprobic. Growing alone, scattered, or gregariously in troops or fairy rings in lawns and disturbed-ground areas like roadsides, gardens, the edges of fields, and so on. Often appearing in the vicinity of conifers especially spruces in spring through fall.

Notes:

I think this is the shaggy parasol mainly because the stem lacks the snakeskin-like patterning associated with the parasol mushroom (Macrolepiota procera). Spotted in Spielderbos, Veluwe, Holland. (sources:see reference)
