Field Notes

Description:

Family Limacodidae. It has three long projections on each side of the flat body; the body is covered with hair (setae) are not poisonous as many people think, but those who have sensitivity can feel discomfort. Like all Limacodidae caterpillars, the real legs (first tree ones) are shortened and "prolegs" (false legs) are reduced and have suckers. They have this shape that makes them look bigger or more than just one, possibly to discourage predators.
