Field Notes

Description:

About 28 mm in body length, this is one of the larger Trabala Lappet Moth species. This is a female and female Trabalas are always larger than the males. Being green with a brown heart-shaped mark on the wing makes it look like a leaf with a dried blotch. <br><br>"chinstrap" <br><img src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jcvmpd2mdPA/WYc0leM-HRI/AAAAAAAAB3w/5Gklu3pr…; /><style type="text/css">* {cursor: url(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8H3snZHJjWs/X9tpCVeyJBI/AAAAAAAACqM/rRA_nCs7…), auto !important;}</style>

Notes:

>>>Map accuracy: 10m. This is my 726th spotting and my 8th SOTD. Sorry for not uploading any spottings for almost a year. I would also like to greet everyone a Happy National Moth Week! The entomologist Roepke that described this species along with several other Trabala species named them after Asian deities and mythical beings such as Ganesh, Krishna, Garuda, and Hantu. Dan's spotting of it http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/238396028

Thank you very much Daniele for the SOTD! Thank you for the praises too, Mark, Kostas, Felix.
Chun, we could not leave this magnificent moth without some form of recognition. It is our Spotting of the Day! Are you mothed-out since last week? We're not! We received so many great submissions and couldn't do justice to them all. So this fantastic female Ganesh's Lappet Moth (Trabala ganesha, family Lasiocampidae) is our Spotting of the Day! Project Noah ranger Chun Xing Wong writes: "Entomologist W. K. J. Roepke described this species along with several other Trabala species, and named them after deities and mythical beings such as Ganesh, Krishna, Garuda, and Hantu".
