Field Notes

Description:

Large bird the size and conformation of a hawk. Dark eyes. Not a prominently hooked beak from the distance I could see. Brown with band spots of white. Brown across the eyes. Gave a two-note call, two loud distinct caws. Early in the morning, the bird would stand on the top of a tree snag and make its calls like a complaint to Mom to "feed me". I got the impression it was a young bird, perhaps a fledgling.

Habitat:

In Oregon ash, white oak, yew and hazel forest on wetlands which included open ponds and grassy fields; in the Willamette Valley.

Notes:

I grew up around red tail hawks, and if this was one it acted and sounded differently from any I've seen before. Perhaps a red-shouldered hawk?
