White Flannel Moth caterpillar
Norape ovina
37.2673, -77.5051
Field Notes
Description:
White Flannel Moth
Yellow body, black back, orange-red ends. Nearly invisible hairs or quills jutting out
Habitat:
Eating leaves of a redbud tree, suburban yard near woods
Notes:
I first encountered it when I brushed past the tree while mowing the lawn & immediately felt a burning sensation on my arm & leg. Today I investigated the tree and discovered at least 10 of them throughout, each on its own leaf which had been cut. My finger barely made contact with one of the "hairs" and immediately I felt a stinging burn & developed a raised welt
