Pygmy Rattlesnake
Sistrurus miliarius
31.9571, -95.9747
Field Notes
Description:
Gray body with black blotches on the sides and back. There is also an orange dorsal stripe. This guy was a monster for this species, all 23 inches of him (the record is just over 25 inches). That said, I could still barely hear him rattling at me; this species has a tiny rattle that is rather useless.
Habitat:
Found under a log that was raised off the ground, presumably trying to feed on any rodents that passed over the log. Bog area with oak trees and ferns.
