Field Notes

Description:

Slightly smaller than a house sparrow or roughly same-size. With brown plumage and a scaly pattern on the front. Typical seed-eater beak or finch-like beak.

Habitat:

Ayutthaya near Bangkok. We had just got down from the car which was being parked under the trees (last shot) and there was great excitement as there were many turtles in the water body we were to cross...when my peripheral vision showed me these birds...they were unconcerned and ignored me till I brought out my camera and then they went to the other side of the tree-trunk where I took the shots.
Initially I thought the trees were betel- nut trees but no, the fruits appear to be soft.

Notes:

The use of plastic in the nest was sad...but shows how the birds adapt...they seemed happy enough and who knows, their waterproof nest (partially at least) may be considered upmarket in avian circles.
