Description:
My second visit to this manhole and it's habitants - a small clan of Fire salamanders. This time, 7-8 animals well visible - there were a dozen or more the first time (https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/842401653), late spring last year. They are about 10 to 20cm in length, and are conspicuously coloured and easy to recognize.
Habitat:
Seen in rural suburbs of Lyon, east-central France, in a garden bordering a broadleaved forest. Found in a manhole with water connection for the house. As this was my second visit to this manhole, we heard that the clan was regularly hiding there during the day last spring; only to disappear last summer and autumn. They seem to come back with the beginning of winter, and they seem hibernating now - they are there all day long and every day.
Notes:
Based on their colouring, with yellow spots roughly organised in two parallel lines, I can suppose the subspecies - S. s. terrestris, the most common one in France.
